How are ECO EGG free range chickens farmed?

ECO EGGS® is the brand name for our free range eggs

All farms supplying the ECO EGG Co Ltd are independently audited and comply with high animal welfare standards.

Special attention is paid to the natural needs of our hens which they are allowed to fully develop in all ECO EGG production systems.

Chickens producing ECO EGGS can move freely during daylight hours. They can stretch their wings, have sun and dust baths and scratch for worms and insects.

ECO EGG chickens have access to healthy green paddocks where they can eat a lot of greens which results in very dark yolk colours.

The ancestors of our modern chickens were forest birds which sheltered in trees.
ECO EGG hens can enjoy similar shelter from wind, sun and predators and to avoid population stress maximum stock numbers per flock are limited

ECO EGG chickens are vaccinated against salmonella and are protected from vermin and predators by appropriate safe control methods.

ECO EGG chickens have sufficient perch space for each hen in the hen houses and have dry and clean litter for them to scratch in to keep themselves clean.

The hen houses must be draught free and dry and the supplementary feed for the hens is heat treated and available to the hens all day round

To keep our hens healthy expert advise is sought when and if necessary.  All farms operate their own Risk Management Programme which is verified yearly by agents of the New Zealand Food and Safety Authority (NZFSA)

Natural preventative health remedies are administered by some producers, such as adding organic cider vinegar and garlic to the hens’ drinking water.
